Born in 1989 – Democracy Tales for Young Europeans

Born in 1989 – Democracy Tales for Young Europeans is a transnational initiative funded by the European Union under the CERV – Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme. The project seeks to increase young people’s understanding of the democratic transformations that took place in 1989 across Central and Eastern Europe, marking the end of totalitarian regimes and the rebirth of free societies.

The year 1989 was a turning point — a symbol of courage, hope, and the collective will for change. Yet, for many young Europeans born after that time, these events remain distant and abstract. Born in 1989 bridges that gap by offering innovative ways to experience history and to connect it with contemporary challenges to democracy and civic participation.

What is interesting in Born 1989?

Project activities include a transnational photo exhibition focusing on the role of youth during the 1989 revolutions; the creation of a digital time capsule gathering visual, cultural, and personal memories from the era; and intergenerational talks with former activists and witnesses of the democratic transitions. Additionally, educational workshops for students and teachers will promote creative, transnational approaches to teaching about 1989, while an international training for young activists will build leadership and advocacy skills for promoting democracy, solidarity, and European cooperation.

Together, they work to foster a shared European historical consciousness, encourage dialogue between generations, and strengthen young people’s commitment to democratic values. By revisiting the lessons of 1989, the project not only commemorates Europe’s past but also inspires its future — a Europe united in diversity, freedom, and civic engagement.

The consortium brings together six partners with complementary expertise: Fundacja Instytut Europejski (Poland), Centrum Edukacie a Inovacii (Slovakia), Academia Romana Filiala Cluj Napoca (Romania), Pillar Alapitvany (Hungary), Kistler-Ritso Eesti SA (Estonia), and The Remembrance Forum e.V. (Germany).
